Spark Talks is back starting Sept 16th - Save the Date 

Mark your calendars; the first Spark Talk of the 2022-2023 school year will be on Fri September 16th at 10:30 - 11:20am.  Spark's Executive Director, Allison Van,  will be bringing us “Back to School”  with an overview of tips and tricks for platforms, backup services and accessing digital materials.

Spark's Annual Open House - Reminder 

Don't Forget! Spark: a centre for social research innovation is hosting it's annual open house event on September 23rd 2022 at 10:30am - 2:30 pm ET in the Spark space/Co-Lab on the 5th floor of L.R. Wilson Hall at McMaster University. 

Stop in to learn about Spark, research methods, network with other researchers and for games/fun activities. We will be offering a light lunch and snacks. To receive lunch, please fill out our mandatory form by September 15th at 11:59 pm. There will also be a door raffle and prizes!

Note: Only the Introduction Session (10:30 - 11:20 am EST) will be available in a hybrid format. To participate virtually, please click this zoom link here on the day of the event. All other sessions will take place in-person.
 

After another year of engaging seminars, Spark will be taking a break from Spark Talks during the summer months (May-Aug).

With excitement for Spark Talks return in Fall 2022, we will feature some of our favourite talks from this year in a weekly social media campaign on Twitter @Spark_McMaster. Join us on twitter every Friday at 10:30am during the summer for #SparkResearchReplay!

Looking to pool software licences?

Now you can! Fill out this form and we will reach out if we can match you with others looking to pool licences.

We are also attempting a pilot in fall term allowing for virtual desktop access to several licenses for major Qualitative Data Analysis software, and will be seeking volunteers to test out the viability of this option.  FSS faculty, please email talk.to.spark@mcmaster.ca if you're interested in participating.  


Research Conversations

We provide up to 4 hours of free support each year to all McMaster researchers (students, staff and faculty) on every social research topic imaginable.  If we can't help you, we'll help you find someone who can.

McMaster Graduate Students Association (GSA) Hosts Grad Yoga

Want to relax and meet some new friends? Join a free Yoga session as part of McMaster Welcome Week at McMaster David Braley Athletic Centre. 

In-person yoga will take place at 4-5pm on September 8th 2022

Sherman Centre Graduate Residency Program

Each year, the Sherman Centre invites applications for the residency program, which is designed to support graduate students working on a research project in digital scholarship, broadly defined, which expands and challenges their respective fields. 

The 2023 Graduate Residency will accept application between September 19th and November 4th 2022.

CANSSI Ontario Research Day 2022

The CANSSI Ontario Research Day showcases the work and discoveries by the data sciences and statistics community in Ontario. This one-day conference draws participants from many Ontario universities, public, not-for-profit, and the research sector for a full day of data and discoveries.

SPEC -  Statistical Computing Self-Study Curriculum for Incoming Doctoral Students

SPEC focuses on training students in data management and data visualization using R, an open source statistical software package. 

Now available - a free, self-study statistical computing curriculum designed specifically for incoming political science doctoral students. The modules begin with Intro to R and cover data management (dplyr and tidyr packages) and data visualization (ggplot2). Each module contains a series of 5-10 minutes lecture videos on YouTube and a walkthrough PDF, which explains each function and provides example code for students to run on their own computers.

Kudos to Vass Bednar (Master of Public Policy in Digital Society) who authored the Maclean's article "Why delivery apps are dying". Vass argues that apps like Uber, DoorDash, and Just Eat are inarguably convenient but they'll need a new strategy to survive inflation.

A big congratulations to Anabelle Ragsag (Social Work PhD Student) who is the inaugural recipient of the Stephen Lewis Fellowship. This Fellowship allows a student to explore Lewis' impact on Canadian social policy by examining his detailed archive housed at the McMaster University Library.
