Basic Probability

Probability is the science of likelihood.

It allows you to know the chances of an event occurrence and predicts how likely something can take place. Probabilities expressions can take the form of 0 to 1 or a percentage of 0% to 100%. If you deal with lots of numbers and test the errors, likelihoods, or possibilities of interventions, events, or change then probabilities is the tool for you!

Resource: Basic Probability Rules and Conditional Probability and Independence (University of Florida Biostatistics Open Learning Textbook)

Type: Textbook chapter
Who it’s for:Anyone looking to learn about or refresh the basic rules of probability
Why we love it: These textbook chapters are well presented with lots of applied examples and intuitive explanations. Key probability equations are also presented, and the end of chapter summaries are very handy.

Resource:Basic probability theory (Sharon Goldwater – University of Edinburgh) NOTE: The document states not to redistribute without permission

Type: Manual
Who it’s for:Anyone who needs to refresh or improve their knowledge of basic probability theory to tackle quantitative challenges
Why we love it: This is a great overview of the basics of probability because the different forms of notation you may come across are highlighted and the terminology is carefully explained.
