Topics in Indian Buddhist Texts: 108 Shades of Ochre
This seminar will survey the corpus of extant Indian Buddhist monastic legal codes. Special attention will be paid to a number of themes including but not limited to Buddhist attitudes to celibacy, sexual conduct and misconduct, and sexuality in general. Although the focus of the seminar will be on premodern India, consideration will also be given to how monastic rules have been adopted, adapted, and sometimes even ignored in the modern world. All readings will be in English.
