Readings in Japanese Religions
This seminar provides an overview of significant themes and debates in the modern academic study of Japanese religions. The aim of this class will be threefold: first, to acquire a solid grasp of the major figures, trends, and events of Japanese religious history; second, to learn the theoretical skills with which to critically approach source materials; and third, to understand our positioning within the field of scholarship. Students will be expected to lead seminar discussions and provide response papers each week. A final project will be developed in consultation with the professor. Readings will be English. No previous experience with the study of Japanese religions is required.
