Armstrong-Sutton Aven, PhD Student

Biography
As a doctoral student, I’m committed to research and practice that deconstructs how discourses (e.g. gender binaries, compulsory heterosexuality, relational practices, and sexual mores) of heteronormativity constitute our social realities. My dissertation project will examine the role of heteronormativity in rural queer resilience. Moreover, I am passionate about exploring how spirituality can inform our conceptualisation of critical social work and our commitment to social justice. Before my doctoral work, I practised in the fields of child protection, housing and homelessness, and mental health. I completed my Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work from York University.
