Alison Symington is an advocate, a researcher, a leader and a mother. Her social justice and human rights work has taken her to venues as diverse as the Supreme Court of Canada, the World Social Forum in Brazil, WTO Ministerial Meetings in Mexico, and UNAIDS meetings in Geneva. She holds a law degree from the University of Toronto and a Masters in International Legal Studies from New York University. Currently, she is Acting National Director of Pro Bono Students Canada — a national law school-based program that mobilizes law students to help address access to justice needs of low-income individuals. Previously, she was the Co-Director of Research and Advocacy at the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network. In this role she pioneered feminist analysis of the criminalization of HIV non-disclosure, including producing two documentaries. She has also worked with LEAF — the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund — on issues of sexual assault and HIV criminalization. Alison’s passion for advancing equality and justice keeps her busy with various initiatives — from her children’s school to international campaigns. She heartedly believes that positive change is possible, and we all have a role to play.
