When looking for a place to call home, it was important for Raisa to attend a University with a good academic ranking. But after coming to McMaster she realized how much more this school has to offer.  It didn’t take long for her to feel at home at McMaster and to take advantage of everything Hamilton has to offer.

“Before coming to Canada, I was nervous about coming far from home, and this is my first time away from my family.”

“If I could describe the McMaster community in one word it would be welcoming. There are so many events for International students, it made me feel like part of a community. It is easy to connect with other students like you. I’m comfortable going up and talking to people here.” 

Outside of the McMaster community, Raisa has also fallen in love with Hamilton.

“I love going out downtown and exploring Hamilton. Last weekend went to For Real Dough, which is a cookie dough ice cream shop. There is such a wide range of things to do and places to see, it’s exciting.”

When asked about Social Sciences I, she said, “I like that first year is so broad. I thought about majoring in Economics when I arrived but after taking some classes I wasn't sure. After meeting with my academic advisor, I know my options to major in. I now realize how easy it is to switch between programs. Without a general first year I would not have been able to explore my interests.”

On top of a full course load and exploring Hamilton, Raisa is a part of Artists of McMaster club. When asked about the opportunities she said, “there is a club for everyone.”

When asked how she has changed in her short time at McMaster she said;

 “I am not the same person I was from back home. I have become a lot more confident and open. I was shy back home, but here I am way more open with who I am and my passions, everyone here has been so accepting.”

“If I could give other international first year students one piece of advice it would be to get out of your comfort zone. It might seem intimidating to talk to new people or try out for that new club, but people are so welcoming here and open. Also, if you need to, reach out for help if you need it, people are willing to help you! There is so much support here, no matter what you are experiencing there is someone who will listen to you. To be successful here the most important thing to bring to McMaster would be a positive attitude.”
