Biography
Alberta, a third year Sociology student from Sierra Leone, can see the difference McMaster has had on her. Over her time here, she has become more confident and independent.
“When applying to university I was most concerned it would be difficult to find friends. I was also scared I would not find a place on campus I was comfortable in. Once I got to McMaster, I realized there are a lot of events that made me feel comfortable here”.
Alberta has no shortage of positive memories at McMaster.
“After I got to McMaster there was an event at the Wellness Centre to help students destress before midterms. I remember standing outside wondering if I should go in. Right before I was about to leave, an upper year student came out from the event and asked if I wanted to go in. I ended up having a great time. This is a great example of how inclusive McMaster is.”
Outside of the McMaster Community, Alberta feels at home within the Hamilton Community. “When I miss home, I like to cook my traditional foods. Living in Hamilton has made this possible because of the international grocery store, Nations Fresh Foods located in downtown Hamilton. There, I am able to find the ingredients I need to bring a little bit of my hometown to Hamilton.”
Her favorite traditional foods to make include foo foo, pepper soup, and okra stew.
In her free time Alberta likes to watch movies, read books and explore Hamilton with her friends. One of her favorite spots is a restaurant called Tracie's Place.
Reflecting on her time at McMaster, Alberta can see how much she has changed thanks to the school.
“Because of the amount of support provided to International students by McMaster, I have gone from being very shy to being much more independent and outgoing. I have also learned how to ask for help when I need. My classes have taught me so many skills such as; leadership, decision making, time management, and public speaking.”
“If I could give new students one piece of advice it would be don’t be anxious about attending McMaster. People are welcoming and it’s easy to get comfortable here. Make sure to join lots of clubs because it makes it easier to feel at home on campus and with Canada. I know I am much more adjusted to life in Canada now because of all the programs and resource’s on campus.”
