Pugliese Melanie
Biography
I completed my B.Sc Honours in Biology at McMaster University with a minor in Anthropology in 2020. During my undergraduate thesis project in paleoethnobotany, I performed microbotanical analysis on materials recovered from a Classic Period site near the Copán area of Northwestern Honduras.
For my M.A. research, I will look at both microbotanical and macrobotanical material to reconstruct the paleoenvironment and elucidate human-environment interactions. I hope to determine how past societies in Mesoamerica were utilizing plant resources and how changes in the climate and the environment may have influenced practices in the area. Understanding how the ancient Maya were able to utilize their surrounding environment to sustain their large population numbers and how humans adapted to shifts in climate has implications for possible best practices in agriculture and environment sustainability today.
