Thesis Title: Because She Cares: A narrative study exploring the work experiences of African immigrant women employed in the Ontario HIV sector
Lori Chambers is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Social Work. She received her B.S.W. from York University and her M.S.W. from the University of Toronto. In 2016, Lori was awarded the Ontario Women’s Health Scholars Award. She was a recipient of the Vanier Canada Graduate scholarship in 2013 and the Harry Lyman Hooker Senior Fellowship in 2012.
Lori has participated in the Ontario HIV sector for over 18 years, starting as a volunteer and then as a social worker employed in HIV/AIDS service organizations (ASOs). It is through her work in ASOs that she became involved in community based research (CBR) frameworks which she applies to her activism with, for, and by ethnoracial communities impacted by HIV.
Her research interests include HIV and employment, and the transition of grassroots activism into labour market participation. She is also interested in developing participatory, community engaged research approaches that are cultural congruent and reverent to experiential and emotional knowing
