Biography

Martha graduated with a B.A. (Honours) in Greek and Roman Studies, with a double minor in Archaeology and Anthropology from Carleton University in 2018 and completed her M.A. in Globalization from McMaster University in 2021. Her Master’s research used an interdisciplinary and case study-based approach to examine the impact of climate change and forced migration, exploring the potential of the prima facie refugee status, and making the case for formal recognition of climate refugees.

Martha’s doctoral research, under the supervision of Dr. Petra Rethmann, explores the post-industrial city in the age of climate change and how our relationship to place and home may be altered by the changing environment and cityscape. She hopes to better understand how people, politics, labour unions, and sacrifice zones intersect at this pivotal moment in human history, as we navigate the multi-faceted and unevenly distributed impacts of climate change.
