Bernier Alexe, PhD Student
Biography
Alexe began her first year in the PhD program at McMaster University’s School of Social Work in September of 2020. She has her BSc (2014) and MSW (2016) from the University of Calgary. Alexe has returned to the world of academia after 4 years of practicing as a social worker in gender-specific community programs, specifically supporting girls in the strengthening of their leadership and activism skills. She believes that when girls are supported, they have the power to radically transform their communities and beyond.
Alexe’s interests lie in feminist and girlhood studies, critical youth studies, youth- and girl- led social change movements, and community level social work practice. In her doctoral program at McMaster she is interested in exploring best practices for organizations to critically engage and work with girls in gender-specific community programs. When she’s not learning from and getting inspired by girls, Alexe enjoys live music, attending visual art exhibitions, and spending lots of time outside hiking and camping as many Calgarians do.
