Biography
Shelby Auburn is a recent graduate from Queen’s University’s graduating class of 2016. She graduated with Honors in Bachelor of Arts completing a double major in Global Development and Drama. During her time at Queen’s, Shelby was a member of the Youth Outreach Committee for Queen’s Project on International Development (QPID). She collaborated with this team to organize workshops and conferences for high school students, where they focused on promoting the importance of critical thinking, and the understanding of current global issues. She was also involved with the Queen’s theatre community, where she took on several different crew positions for a variety of shows. Furthermore, she also spent three years participating in Ontario Youth Parliament, an annual conference where youth gathered to create and debate their own legislation based on issues that were important to them. After graduating, Shelby spent a year and a half working as a customer care representative at ServiceOntario. In Toronto, she volunteered with the Youth Mentorship Program at the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture (CCVT), where mentors provided various types of support to survivors of war and torture. Shelby also volunteered as a programs and fundraising assistant with Jack.Org, a national mental health organization aimed at ending the stigma around mental health through programs designed for youth. This summer, she also spent five weeks traveling and exploring Ireland and Scotland before returning to begin the MA program. Shelby has many research interests, some of which include human rights violations, gender inequality, mental health, and the intersections of race, class, gender, etc. and how they dictate structural inequality. She hopes to further expand her knowledge in these areas, as well as to gain insights into new academic and international pursuits.
