Biography
My name is Orezi, and I graduated from the Honours Health Studies and Psychology program in 2016. I currently work in Public Health (after completing an M.Sc.) where I plan, implement and evaluate health projects and conduct health policy analysis and advocacy.
To be honest, I didn’t start my first year at Mac with the intention of getting into the Health Studies (now called Health & Society) program. I literally ‘stumbled’ into the program, but it’s been one of the best ‘falls’ of my career journey.
The Health & Society program is unique because of the early exposure and continuous dedication to experiential learning. I remember having to complete a placement in first year, and again for a third-year course. My first-year volunteer placement was with a community health centre and that experience led to so many more opportunities; it is why I decided to pursue Health Studies, as the ripple effect of that placement has been amazing.
I also enjoyed the smaller program and class size; we all knew each other and shared opportunities as they arose. I liked that the courses in the program provided a social context to the understanding of health and health systems. Coming from a biological science background, I found that this program provides a balanced view of health realities that is very critical to be a well-rounded healthcare professional. My presentation, public speaking and report writing skills were certainly honed during my time at Mac, foundationally through the courses in this program.
I totally recommend the Health & Society program to anyone interested in the subject matter and do not doubt the valuable experiences this program will provide to incoming students. McMaster has provided a great Health & Society program for a future in healthcare, I strongly suggest that incoming students seize the opportunity. Go out of your way to engage with professors, intentionally seek placements/career experiences and get involved with your faculty and valuable extracurricular activities to make the most of your undergraduate years…your future self will be thankful you did, trust me!
